OLD SCHOOL HOUSE
HERITAGE ROOF
This project involved the full refurbishment of a residential roof at a historic former school building in Buckinghamshire. Works included the careful restoration of a 158m2 pitched roof, an 18m2 flat roof, and a 6m2 bell tower.

Original plain tiles resembling a modern Cheshire Mix were salvaged and reused to retain the property’s period character, while modern insulation and breathable membranes were installed to meet today’s performance standards. Additional complexity came with the construction of a new dormer, requiring bespoke carpentry and rafter alterations to accommodate insulation without disrupting the roofline.

The bell tower was re-roofed in timber shingles with new lead flashings, completed within a constrained and elevated workspace. A torch-on Icopal system was used for the flat roof, chosen for its durability and fire-safe properties.

The team managed logistics around limited access and tight storage, phasing deliveries and maintaining daily progress briefings to stay on schedule. The project was delivered safely and efficiently, earning praise for both its execution and sensitivity to the building’s heritage.
