CAMBERWELL COLLEGE OF ARTS

HISTORIC SLATE ROOF

Stoic Roofing & Construction successfully completed the restoration of the historic slate roof on a Grade II listed building at the University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts. The project involved carefully replacing over 4,500 Welsh slates while salvaging and reusing many of the original tiles to preserve the building's authenticity.

The scope of work included:

  • Replacing damaged slates with high-quality Welsh slate (CUPA PIZARRAS, R9 Excellence).

  • Installing copper nails and a breathable underlay to enhance waterproofing and thermal performance of the building.

  • Replacing lead flashings and ridging with Code 5 lead for long-lasting durability.

Access was challenging due to the height and location of the building, so scaffolding and harness systems were used to ensure safe working conditions. The team worked closely with the University to minimise disruption during the project.

Key challenges included managing the preservation of original materials and upgrading the roof’s thermal and waterproofing performance. With careful planning and skilled workmanship, the project was completed on time and within budget, ensuring the roof met modern standards while maintaining its charming historic character.
